What to do after a car accident in Florida
A calm, step-by-step checklist. Save it in your phone or glove box.
Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt
Your safety comes first. If anyone has severe pain, trouble breathing, a head injury, or can鈥檛 move normally, call 911 and don鈥檛 move them unless they鈥檙e in danger.
Move to safety
If the vehicles can be driven and no one is hurt, move out of traffic. Turn on hazard lights.
Call the police
Florida law requires reporting a crash that causes injury or death, or apparent property damage of $500 or more (Fla. Stat. 搂316.065). A police report can also help with your insurance claim. Ask for the report number.
Exchange information and take photos
Get names, phone numbers, insurance companies, policy numbers, and license plates. Photograph the vehicles, the scene, and any visible injuries.
Notify your auto insurer
Report the accident to your own insurer promptly and write down your claim number.
Get checked within 14 days
Florida PIP generally requires initial care within 14 days of the accident for benefits to apply. Even if you feel fine, some symptoms appear later.
Keep a simple record
Note new symptoms, missed work, and appointments. Keep receipts and paperwork in one folder.
